As the world continues to modernize and speed up our lifestyles, convenience takes precedence over form. Fewer and fewer people are living active lifestyles, even though there’s never been a better time to take up a new sport, try a new healthy diet, read motivational articles and information about what we’re putting into our mouths daily. With so much nutritional information out there, you’d think people would be more inquisitive about their diet. However, the world of work waits for no one and reading the back of a food item pack, isn’t high up on the list of priorities for most people. Although obesity has got something to do with genes because our DNA plays a large factor in deciding our body types, but most of it has to do with personal choices, lifestyle, and attitude. Cravings and laziness live in the mind, and by far are the two biggest detrimental personality traits that cause self-harm in the form of being overweight.
Standing on the precipice
Little do you know, you might be on the verge of changing your health but always fail to make that last final step. Taking into account, that for women especially, hormonal changes affect the female body in ways that men simply don’t experience. Certain cravings may be unusual, but rather than getting a quick fix, such as a chocolate bar, simply change that food item, for say a fruit bar. It’s such as easy change to make and enforce. You’re not dismissing your craving; you’re just replacing an unhealthy option with a better one. Similarly, with working out, many people are tempted to get up and go to the gym, but make excuses not to. Taking the first step is not like trying to climb a mountain, on the contrary, you’re on the edge and almost tipping over. Some people find that going to the gym with a friend helps them a lot to actually turn up because you’re not just letting yourself down, but you’re friend too.

Many people don’t even realize they’re heading towards obesity because of their mental state. Comfort eating causes the endorphins glands to release a sense of euphoria and masks the negative feelings, such as depression. The issue of overreacting goes far deeper than a lack of self-control, it usually comes from a lack of coping skills. A clinical psychologist can identify trigger mechanisms that cause obesity, which is essentially a form of self-harm. If you’ve had a traumatic childhood, abused by your parents, bullied at school, have a lack of confidence when meeting members of the opposite sex when looking for a relationship, or have social anxiety disorder among many other things, comfort eating is a form of escapism many turn to.

Ready and waiting
It’s incredibly tempting to order a fast food take away after a long hard day of work. It’s no wonder people get addicted to fast food because such meals are pumped full of sugar, fats, and salt. However, you can battle the cravings by having home cooked food already prepared at home, in the fridge, ready to heat up when you get home. Equally, addiction is a chemical imbalance in the brain. One way to counteract a certain food craving is to fill yourself up on something else, so you the craving isn’t triggered in the first place.
